Why you need release notes?

What is Release Notes?

Release notes are documents which are originally created by and for team member and project manager to keep track with project progress. Gradually, release notes have been being used as published tool to let user know what is new with the product.

Why do you need to have release notes?

Normally, release notes play those roles:

  • Informing users of new features.

  • Telling users that we care about their report and are working on them.

  • Educating people about your product.

  • Celebrating the work and effort of your developer

  1. Informing users of new features.

This is the original and basic goal when a team sets up their release notes. Updating release notes regularly will answer your client's question "What exactly this team working on?" Or "Are they still working on the app?" Release notes also helps your users to know what to expect from your product in the future. Or for potential customer, they will have an overview about your product roadmap.

It's also a good tool for your team to keep track with the product development.

2. Telling users that we care about their report and are working on them.

What is more scarier than receiving a lots bad feedback or review? It's no one cares about your product. When a customer 's willing to spend their time to report about product's problem that means they really care and love your product.

Don't waste their love.

Let them know that you do care about their feedback and you are working your best to fix those.

And the fastest way is to update your release notes.

3. Educating people about your product.

You may feel weird about this because I just mentioned above that user shouldn't need to read your release notes to know how to use your product. But in case your product is too complicated and have various new features: try using release notes as your "manual guide" version. So your user won't have to ask your Customer Service staff. Lessen the labour cost, more time for your product runway. ;)

4. Celebrating the work and effort of your developer

I like to call the release notes as the hall of fame for the developers in the team. Release notes will mark every work they've done and completed. Reading throughout the release notes will encourage them to be more productivity in order to be able to make more new features.

But more than that, in an era where everything published on the Internet can be a source of leads, release notes should not be ignored. Release notes can be treated as a marketing document which will give your potential clients the overview about what features your product offers. Which leads to:

5. Marketing and Branding asset

Listing out the feature will also help when people search for a specific function they wish a product will provide. Everyone know that their product place on the first Google result page will have such a big effect on their sale and marketing.

Creating and updating a release notes is not that difficult, your team can easily use a tool to update it whenever there is new thing about your product.

It will be helpful for your organic SEO which we all know is a great asset in long run.
